How does the no permadeath work though? It’s the whole conceit of the game. The whole world changes based on how many times you die

Finally no permadeath, I like the punishing aspects but it feels frustrating when one of the key points of the game is exploration and then I made some really stupid mistake that cost of all my progress. Trial and error is part of exploring this kind of game.

Ever since the update was released, no matter how many times I started a new game, and even after the story-driven character death, I always get the same character type but with a different color scheme. What gives?
